Interviews (Interview Archive) Kim Welch is a personal clothier at Austin Taylor in Anaheim, California. While Kim specializes in men's custom clothing she is equally qualified in clothing for women. Among her regular clients are business professionals as well as professional athletes. Her clients have one common thread—Kim assists each one of her fortunate clients in improving their overall style. The first thing you will notice about Kim is her amazing energy. That energy comes into play as she assesses a clients needs, recommends colors, shapes, fabrics even coming to their office or home—all with a high level of energy. Here are some of the insights she has on style: GW: What is the most important issue regarding style? KW: I think, across the board, the most important thing regarding style is confidence. I think there are many people who have what is considered a sexy look but aren't necessarily the best-dressed people that anyone might know. But even then confidence goes a long way. So if we talk in terms of general looks that are across the board for everybody. I can't tell you how much better a man looks when he puts a coat on. Even here, when I'm working with clients and they have a shirt and tie on, they look dressed up. But just by slipping a coat on it immediately gives some credibility; a look of sort of suave, some debonair and some old school. It projects something differently when you're dressed up. You hold yourself up a little straighter, you walk around better, and clothing is an essential way of showing inner confidence outwardly. GW: What items to pay attention to when selecting a suit? What should we go for first? KW: Let's start with pants. I think, traditionally if you're dressing up, a cuff looks better vs. a plain-bottom pant. A cuff will bring some weight to the pant and make it lay a lot nicer. Bodies are not symmetrical, so don't assume that one leg is the same length as the other leg. A lot of times, we'll have client with a quarter-inch, half-inch or full inch difference. That may be from years of athletic activity or other physical activity. The thing to remember is that your body is not symmetrical. At least take time to go to a tailor and have each leg individually hemmed and cuffed. Getting a nice break in the pants is always important. GW: What about shoes and belts? KW: Shoes and belts should always match and get a couple of different pairs of black shoes, so you're not beating the same pair of black shoes time and time again. A good pair of shoes will last you five or 10 years, even if you're wearing the heck out of them. Get them resoled, take care of them. Have them buffed and shined and that will moisturize the leather. A good pair of shoes will be comfortable and also dress up your look. GW: What is the biggest mistake people make when creating their personal style? KW: One of the biggest mistakes I see is the action of wearing ill-fitting clothes, and I primarily see that in shirts and blouses. People should understand that off-the-rack shirts are made to fit as many people, nationwide, as possible, and probably not you specifically. I'll see guys wearing a shirt that looks like a tent on them and the second you put it on and sit in your car, the shirt's wrinkled, you're swimming in this blousy shirt. So cleaning up the shirt can make a big difference. Even if you're not in the best shape and in the physique of your early 20's you can still get a shirt that's more fit to your body that's really going to clean your look up.
